Maison-Mère describes itself as a playground and an accelerator for citizen-led initiatives in Quebec’s Charlevoix region. Projects range from agri-food to alternative accommodation, art/culture/heritage, education and knowledge, co-working, and renewable energy.
Lucy Bernholz’s central message in her book is that giving is about participation and engagement by all of us for all of us. But to be fully realized, giving must involve participation with others, must be driven by a clear set of moral and political values, and must contribute to shaping the society we want.
Martha Rans, a lawyer who specializes in the legal needs of non-profits and charities, objects to the word “lobbying” to describe the sector’s advocacy. “We are not advocating for our own bottom line,” she says. “We are advocating for the public benefit.”
Over the past year, opportunities to connect with people have been largely limited to digital spaces. But with social media giants like Facebook and Twitter no longer attracting Gen Z, some non-profits are looking at platforms such as TikTok and Clubhouse to share information and build relationships with new audiences and potential donors.
