In November 2023, the Definity Insurance Foundation commissioned a report from The Philanthropist Journal to understand the various spending pathways for foundations. These pathways include continuing in perpetuity, limited life or spending down, and a spectrum of other approaches funders are using – or considering – to make a meaningful contribution in society. What was clear in the research is that being intentional about which spending pathway you choose will have an impact on its effectiveness.

This type of research and report writing isn’t a common activity for The Journal, but given our writing on the topic and its relevance to readers, we felt there was an opportunity to dive deeper into the existing writing and debates on spending pathways and lifespans for foundations.

The Definity Insurance Foundation is offering free access to this research so that everyone can learn from it.

“The Definity Insurance Foundation commissioned this research to help us better understand different spending pathways funders are using, and guide our discussions. We recognize that many boardrooms may be having similar conversations, especially as it relates to discussions on addressing inequities, shifting power, and trust-based philanthropy. By openly sharing our research and findings, we aim to support our collective learning and contribute to the advancement of the philanthropic sector.”

—Arti Freeman, CEO of Definity Insurance Foundation

The purpose of this research was to guide the Definity Insurance Foundation in its own discussions about the future of its funds.

The report:

  • outlines different pathways, with examples from the field, and the benefits and limitations of each
  • shares the current context and research
  • provides available guidance and resources for these pathways
  • offers key questions, recommended from interviewees and the literature

This information was gathered through a literature review (see bibliography) and from leaders in the sector.
