The Philanthropist Welcomes a New Editor

With this first issue of Volume 15 we pass another milestone in the journal’s history and welcome David Stevens, a member of our Legal Advisory Board representing McGill University since 1995, as our new editor.

The editorship of The Philanthropist is a voluntary position- a happy circumstance which makes it possible for us to command a level of talent that would otherwise be far beyond the reach of a specialized publication. In taking over the chair vacated by the Han. Mrs. Bertha Wilson, Mary Louise Dickson, Q.C., Lynn Bevan and John Gregory, David becomes yet another distinguished legal practitioner and scholar to bring a formidable list of credentials to the journal’s masthead.

Since 1989, David Stevens has been Associate Professor in the Faculty of Law at McGill University where he continues to teach while also in active practice with the firm of Ogilvie, Renault.

His initial B.A. degree in History was earned at the University of Western Ontario where he also earned an LL.B. He also holds an LL.B. from Cambridge University, England and both an LL.B. and the Diplome de droit notarial from the Universite de Montreal. He was called to the Bar by the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1982. Like his predecessor, John Gregory, he is bilingual.

A lengthy list of published works includes a number of papers, essays, reports and reviews concerned with the nonprofit sector and the law as well as corporate law, tax law and international trade.

Of particular interest to readers of The Philanthropist will be David’s service as Director of the Ontario Law Reform Commission project on the Law of Charities and the significant contribution provided by his outstanding paper on the law of charities.

His volunteer credentials have been earned in a number of legal, educational and religious charities and organizations.

The Board and Staff of The Philanthropist look forward to a happy and productive association with a stimulating new leader.
