The Rideau Hall Foundation and The Philanthropist Journal have teamed up to try something new: we have published a story in Municipal World, a magazine “devoted to promoting effective municipal government” in Canada.
“Counting the Losses when Local Media Disappears,” written by journalist Tim Harper, looks at the impact of local news – and its loss – on community information and well-being. The story highlights the latest research on local news along with voices from local media across the country.
For the past several years, The Philanthropist Journal has been making the case that healthy news ecosystems are critical to the well-being of our communities, planet, democracy, and philanthropy. Rideau Hall Foundation has been contributing to efforts to strengthen local media, too. “We are trying to help people connect to their communities, and we are trying to find a way to strengthen our democracy and find social cohesion in this country,” says RHF’s CEO, Teresa Marques, in this story from December 2025. “Over the last couple of years, it has become very clear to us that having strong local media is critical at the intersection of all those priorities.”
Both organizations understand that municipalities are important partners in supporting local news and published this story to reach local government staff and politicians.
