Quel a été votre premier emploi dans le secteur, ou quel moment a été déterminant pour vous? Mon premier emploi dans le milieu communautaire a été un poste d’intervenante dans une entreprise d’insertion sociale et professionnelle pour femmes immigrantes à Montréal. Au contact de ces femmes, j’ai été renversée par leurs histoires, leurs défis, mais aussi leurs forces et volonté. Ces rencontres ont été un élément charnière dans la construction de mon identité, tant personnelle que professionnelle. Ces femmes fortes m’ont appris qu’il nous était possible, ensemble, de faire bouger des montagnes, une pierre à la fois.
What was your first job in the sector or a defining moment? My first job in the community sector was as a support worker with an organization that encourages the social and professional integration of immigrant women in Montreal. I was blown away by the stories of the women I met, the challenges they had faced, but also by their strength and enthusiasm. My encounters with these strong women were pivotal in the construction of my own identity, both at a personal and professional level. They taught me that, together, we can move mountains—one rock at a time.
Décrivez votre bureau ou votre zone de travail. Mon bureau est souvent un grand fouillis; j’aime travailler sur plusieurs dossiers en parallèle. Je fonctionne avec deux écrans, histoire d’avoir une meilleure visibilité et de travailler sur plusieurs documents à la fois. J’ai affiché mon plan de travail de l’année sur le mur derrière moi, à côté de dessins de mes enfants. Sur mon bureau, une pile de papier récupéré pour griffonner des notes rapides au besoin. Je travaille dans un espace ouvert, petit, avec de nombreux vas et viens et des rencontres et discussions stimulantes… et cela convient parfaitement!
Describe your desk/workspace. My office is often a bit of a mess—I like to have several projects on the go at the same time. I work with two screens because I find it helps to get a better overview of what I’m doing and I’m able to work on several documents at once. I have my work plan for the year stuck up on the wall behind me, right next to drawings by my children. On my desk there’s a pile of reclaimed paper that I use for scribbling down notes. I work in an open yet small space with a lot of comings and goings as well as stimulating meetings and discussions going on around me…and it suits me perfectly!
Quelle est la lecture (site Web, livre, fil Twitter, etc.) qui vous a permis de mieux connaître le secteur communautaire? Avant toute chose, connaître le secteur communautaire pour moi, signifie aller à la rencontre des personnes qui y travaillent au quotidien. Ma première source est donc les rencontres qui me permettent de voir et de mieux comprendre les différentes réalités et besoins du communautaire. Les réseaux sociaux me permettent aussi de garder le lien. Je suis en effet de nombreux organismes et mouvements sociaux sur Facebook et Twitter, que ce soit des organismes locaux ou internationaux.
What are you reading or following that has expanded your understanding of the non-profit sector? Above all, for me, getting to know the nonprofit sector means meeting with people who work in the field every day. My first source is therefore any encounters that allow me to observe and better understand a community’s various realities and needs. Social networks also help me to maintain a connection with the community. I follow numerous organizations and social movements on Facebook and Twitter, both local and international.
Qu’est-ce qui est important pour vous, à quoi prêtez-vous attention, ou quelles sont les questions auxquelles, selon vous, notre secteur doit réfléchir? Le plus souvent grands dépendants de subventions gouvernementales, privées ou de dons, les organismes peinent à joindre les deux bouts pour répondre adéquatement aux besoins de plus en plus criants de leurs usagers. Il y a donc une très grande précarité à travailler dans le milieu communautaire. Cette précarité fait en sorte qu’il y a un grand roulement des employés et en conséquence, une perte des connaissances et pratiques. Il serait essentiel de réfléchir sur la façon dont nous pouvons valoriser les employés du secteur communautaire en leur permettant d’évoluer professionnellement dans nos organismes et s’assurer ainsi de ne pas perdre les pratiques gagnantes mises en place.
What do you think our sector needs to be thinking about? Most often, due to a strong dependence on government subsidies, private grants and donations, organizations struggle to adequately meet the increasingly pressing needs of their clients. Working in the community sector, therefore, can be financially precarious. This precariousness means that there is a high turnover of employees and, consequently, a loss of know-how and practices. It is essential that we reflect on how we value employees in the community sector by allowing them to evolve on a professional level in our organizations and thus ensure that we do not lose good practices.
