The Philanthropist Journal unveils its new website, the culmination of almost two years of planning, outreach, and collaborative design by Sasha Endoh and Kevin Yuen Kit Lo.
The Philanthropist Journal today launched its new website, marking the latest evolution of a publication that traces its roots to a charity law reform campaign that began in Ontario in the late 1960s and culminated with the founding of a specialized periodical in 1972, edited by future Supreme Court of Canada Justice Bertha Wilson.
While the original content was academic in tone and geared to lawyers and accountants, the new site showcases an expanded mandate as the publication aims to increase its readership and broaden coverage to include subjects like Black- and Indigenous-led philanthropy, public policy debates, grassroots volunteerism, and mental health issues facing sector organizations. (For more details, please see the press release.)
“When we migrated all our publishing online in 2009, the goal was to reach a wider readership while maintaining our commitment as Canada’s preeminent source of expert analysis,” says executive director Leslie Wright, a member of the board of directors of the Agora Foundation, which publishes The Philanthropist Journal. “The new site takes us to the next level and gives our writers and editors the opportunity to provide wide-ranging coverage of a sector that touches the lives of every Canadian.” (A backgrounder on Agora’s role.)
The site showcases editorial features developed over the past two years, including a regular news digest, Q&As with sector leaders, solutions journalism columns, and feature reporting by journalists from across Canada. The new content rounds out The Philanthropist Journal’s core publishing program, which includes expert commentary, academic essays, book reviews, profile series, and content published through partnerships. Since last year, the content has been supported by input from a newly established Editorial Advisory Committee, consisting of 26 sector leaders from across Canada.
Canada’s non-profit sector includes 170,000 charities and non-profits, which collectively employ 2.4 million people and generate 8.3% of GDP. More information about The Philanthropist Journal’s mission and values is available here.
