Our Collection of Policy Matters from Leaders Across the Country

Many non-profit organizations, charities, networks, and coalitions see elections as a critical opportunity to raise relevant public policy issues that they believe will improve the lives of Canadians. Over the past several years, the rules for charities engaging in public policy have become a prominent source of debate and discussion in government and the sector. As we counted down to the 43rd federal election in 2019, The Philanthropist asked non-profit leaders about their top of mind public policy issues.

The collection of responses is now available for download below.

Readers will see that this collection presents a variety of views from Canadian leaders from coast to coast to coast. The issues discussed range from mental health to sport, climate change, and housing. We hope these thoughtful responses will be useful as you ponder the issues facing Canadians this election. Indeed, we encourage readers to share this booklet with colleagues and board members, or raise some of these points with your local candidates or at political debates and discussions in your community.

“Non-profits contribute to Canada’s economic engine, and the social and cultural fabric of our communities,” notes Alexa Briggs of the Calgary Chamber of Voluntary Organizations in her profile. “They strengthen civic and democratic engagement by amplifying the voices of those who might not otherwise be heard. If we use our collective voice to encourage #nonprofitsvote, we can make a difference.”
